Gustave Doré (1832–1883) est l’un des artistes français les plus importants du XIXe siècle. Né à Strasbourg, il fut dessinateur, graveur, illustrateur, peintre, aquarelliste et sculpteur. Il acquit une renommée internationale grâce à ses illustrations des grands classiques de la littérature, notamment La Bible, La Divine Comédie de Dante, Don Quichotte, Rabelais et Les Contes de Perrault. Son style spectaculaire, dramatique et riche en contrastes a profondément marqué l’histoire de l’illustration et de la gravure.

Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was one of the most important French artists of the 19th century. Born in Strasbourg, he was a draughtsman, engraver, illustrator, painter, watercolorist and sculptor. He achieved international fame through his illustrations of major literary classics, including the Bible, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, Rabelais and Perrault’s Fairy Tales. His dramatic, highly imaginative and richly contrasted style had a lasting influence on illustration and printmaking.
